The National Conference of Mayors has awarded more than $13,000 to the Center in Long Beach to fund an AIDS education program.

The Center, a social service agency serving the city’s gay and lesbian residents, was among nine groups nationwide that received funding. The other recipients are in Seattle, Houston, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Buffalo and New Orleans.

Michael Brown, executive director of the Center, said the grant will enable the group to provide “a full array of AIDS prevention services.” AIDS, or acquired immune deficency syndrome, is a disease that primarily hits homosexual men.
