A UCSD student who pleaded guilty to misdemeanor vandalism in the spray-painting of hundreds of paisley designs all over campus was ordered Wednesday to pay $8,000 in clean-up costs.

Attorney Lee Morrison, representing Lee Ann Okada, 22, of University City, appeared before San Diego Municipal Court Judge E. Mac Amos to receive the sentence. Okada was not present.

Amos imposed no jail time and placed the student on three years’ probation on condition she have some counseling. He imposed a $3,000 fine, but that was stayed until she pays the clean-up costs.

The judge ordered a review date of Aug. 6, 1986, to determine if Okada is making regular monthly payments for the clean-up.

The 300 paisley designs appeared on sidewalks, doors, walls, trees and steps on the campus in March. The student newspaper received an anonymous letter from the “Underground Paisley Army” entitled the “Paisley Manifesto.”

The letter stated that the vandalism was done to “denounce the cold blankness of cement.”

Morrison said there were others involved in the prank but his client was the only one charged. Morrison withdrew an earlier motion to have the guilty plea withdrawn and have Okada go on trial.
