Barbara Stanwyck, star of such films as “Stella Dallas” and “Double Indemnity” as well as the television series “The Big Valley,” escaped injury Friday afternoon in a fire that caused damage of $1.5 million to her Trousdale Estates home.

Stanwyck said she was alerted by the alarm in her house on Loma Vista Drive at about 3:40 p.m.

Standing outside, as more than 30 Los Angeles firefighters battled the blaze, Stanwyck remarked wryly: “I’ve been in things like this before, but I always got paid for it.”

Lynn Bloom, a resident of the area where many of Hollywood’s film and television stars reside, described the smoke as “very heavy” and said flames were “burning brightly.”

Fire Department dispatcher Kathy Baker said the fire was controlled shortly before 5 p.m. and doused about 20 minutes later.

Fire officials said the blaze resulted in $1.5 million damage to the actress’ 9,000-square-foot home. The cause of the fire, which apparently started in the roof, was under investigation.
