Suspect Pleads Not Guilty in Double Killing

A Canoga Park man pleaded not guilty Wednesday in Bakersfield to charges that he murdered his girlfriend and her 14-year-old son and buried them on a remote ranch in San Luis Obispo County.

Robert Frederick Garceau, 38, is charged with the stabbing deaths of Maureen Bautista, 38, of North Hollywood and her son, Telesforo, at a Bakersfield apartment in September in a dispute over drugs, Kern County Deputy Dist. Atty. Dan Sparks said. The bodies were found buried at a ranch near Shandon in March.

Because he was charged with a double homicide, Garceau, if convicted, faces the death penalty. He is being held without bail at Kern County Jail, Sparks said.

Garceau also has been charged with killing the ranch owner, Gregory Rambeau, who was shot to death in a Monterey County ravine March 13, Sparks said.

Garceau is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Monterey County next week in connection with the Rambeau slaying, the prosecutor said.
