Newport Beach : Road-Widening Project Included in City Budget

A project to widen a stretch of Coast Highway between MacArthur Boulevard and the Santa Ana flood control channel was among major items in the 1985-86 budget approved by the City Council.

City Manager Robert Wynn said $6.1 million is earmarked for the city’s share of the road-widening project, covering the stretch of road between Bayshore Drive and MacArthur. The California Department of Transportation will complete the project by spending $9.8 million to widen the highway between Newport Boulevard and the flood control channel. The highway will be widened from four lanes to six.

Coastal Commission approval is pending and the two-year project is scheduled to begin by early 1986, Wynn said.

The city’s $62.9-million budget, approved earlier this week, is 3.2% smaller than last year’s $65-million budget.

Revenues during the fiscal year beginning July 1 are expected to total $65.1 million, up 10.3% from the $58.9 projected for 1984-85. Wynn said improved sales tax, bed tax and development fees account for the projected increase in revenues.
