Laguna Beach : ‘Run-Swim-Run’ to Aid Lifeguard Building Fund

Share

Outside, it looks like a smoothly finished, low-lying building with redwood siding and shiny copper trim. Inside, it still looks like a tree house.

It’s the new Laguna Beach lifeguard headquarters at 175 N. Coast Highway on the Main Beach. And despite innovative fund-raising efforts--including a “wall-signing” party that raised $500 for the lifeguards--it still isn’t finished.

In an effort to complete the building’s rough interior, described by marine safety chief Bruce Baird as “your typical Laguna charmer” with bare wood studs and a plywood floor, a new fund-raiser is planned for July 13. Baird estimates that plumbing, electricity and building costs will total $8,000 in addition to $38,000 already raised for the facility.

The fund-raiser, called a “Run-Swim-Run,” will consist of a rigorous beach run, a half-mile swim around beach buoys, then another beach run. After that workout, participants will repeat the course.

The lifeguards are also sponsoring an ongoing “beef raffle,” offering participants a chance to win prime beef cuts for $1.

Entrance fee for the “Run-Swim-Run” will be $5. Tickets for the beef raffle are available from city lifeguards or at the lifeguard main tower.

Baird said any donations can be sent to P.O. Box 1120, Laguna Beach, Calif. 92652.
