A Manhattan Beach police sergeant has been cleared of threatening defendants in the McMartin Pre-School child abuse case and has been returned to street duty, the city attorney said. William Sapp, whose child is a witness in the case, had been reassigned to office work during an internal investigation. City Atty. Carl Newton declined to discuss the specific nature of the accusations. Sapp’s attorney, Owen Petersen, said that the sergeant “still has several options as to what action he could take against the department or the district attorney’s office or both, but at present none is contemplated.”
