17 County Preps Set for Superstars Camp

Seventeen San Diego County preps were among 216 players chosen to attend the Superstars Basketball Camp, which opens Sunday and runs through July 11 at UC Santa Barbara.

Heading the San Diego list are three players apiece from Sweetwater and Morse. Representing Sweetwater are Matt Simmons, Sean Styles and Mahlon Williams. Morse’s players are Craig Helms, Barney Laffitte and David Parks.

Also chosen were Yancy Brown, La Jolla; Jud Buechler, Poway; Randy Burke, Bonita Vista; Steve Burroughs and Matt Schmidt, El Capitan; Ken Crawford and Nathan Reed, El Camino; Sean Giles and James Wilson, University; Eric Mobley, Helix; and Steve Smith, Serra.

About 500 players, mostly from the West, were nominated by high school coaches and college recruiters to attend the camp, said Rick Eveleth, camp director and basketball coach at La Jolla High School.
