Tustin : Apartment Fire Destroys Two Units, Damages Six

Share

A fire that began on the shake-shingle roof of a Tustin apartment complex destroyed two units and damaged six others before it was extinguished by Orange County firefighters early Saturday.

It took firefighters about 35 minutes to put out the fire at the Walnut East Apartments, 1201 Walnut Ave., which was first reported at about 11:32 p.m. Friday, said county Fire Department spokesman Pat Antrim. But before the blaze was extinguished, two units were completely gutted, six other apartments sustained at least minor smoke damage and about 16 people were left homeless.

Antrim said firefighters discovered that there were no batteries in five of six undamaged smoke alarms in the building.
