A woman who was shot in the hand at Yankee Stadium on July 4 sued the New York Yankees Wednesday for $50 million.

Joanne Barrett, 34, of the Bronx, was sitting in the upper deck of the stadium with her husband Kevin during a game between the Minnesota Twins and the Yankees when a bullet passed through her hand during the sixth inning, according to papers filed in Bronx State Supreme Court.

The slug broke a bone in Barrett’s hand, causing her severe physical and emotional injuries, court papers said.

She later found the bullet in her purse. A police spokesman said ballistics experts were running tests on the bullet.

The family’s lawyer, Harry Lipsig, said Barrett, who is pregnant, suffered further because stadium personnel failed to provide prompt and adequate first-aid.

The couple and their 7-year-old son, Kevin Christopher, Lipsig said, sustained “psychic harm and emotional distress” because of the shooting.

Barrett has spent large sums on medical bills stemming from the incident, the attorney said.

The suit charged the Yankee management with “carelessness, recklessness and negligence,” and asked $8.1 million in compensatory damages and $41.9 million in punitive damages.
