Two people were injured when their vehicles collided head-on Thursday afternoon on the Coronado Bay Bridge--an accident authorities said apparently was caused by a drunken driver.

A California Highway Patrol spokeswoman said traffic was blocked for about 90 minutes as authorities worked to clear the wreckage and a Life Flight helicopter arrived to take Denise Montes, 29, to UC San Diego Medical Center. A hospital supervisor said Montes, a San Diego resident, was in fair condition with a broken leg and facial cuts.

Hijinio Falcon Carrillo, 37, of San Diego, was taken to Coronado Hospital, where he was described as being in fair condition with abdominal injuries.

The CHP spokeswoman said Carrillo, who was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, was going west on the bridge in his pickup truck about 4:20 p.m. when he swerved into the center lane and struck Montes’ car head-on. The center lane is reserved for eastbound traffic at that hour, the spokeswoman said.
