Los Angeles County firefighters and other fire safety experts will hold a demonstration in Topanga Canyon today of methods of protecting homes from grass and brush fires.

Firefighters, county weed-abatement experts and federal Soil Conservation Service officials will use hand tools to thin out a 50-year-old stand of chaparral near the Topanga Community House, 1440 N. Topanga Canyon Blvd. The free brush-clearance demonstrations will be staged between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The safety seminar will be sponsored by the Topanga-Las Virgenes Resource Conservation District, which has held several similar demonstrations in recent years.

District director David Gottlieb said the recent rash of destructive brush fires underscores the need for adequate brush and grass clearance in residential areas. He said representatives of the Santa Monica-based National Foundation for Environmental Safety will also participate in the session.
