The 32nd annual Over-the-Line World Championships, featuring 900 players from throughout the United States and Canada, opens its two-weekend schedule today at 7 on Fiesta Island.

The three-person teams will play all day today and Sunday in seven divisions--four for men and three for women--with the survivors returning July 20 to join the seeded teams.

Finals in all divisions are set for July 21, starting at about 11 a.m. and running through 5 p.m.

Fiesta Island will be closed to traffic as early as 9:30 each morning of the tournament. However, buses will make regular shuttles from the Mission Bay Information Center and Belmont Park to the island throughout each day of the event, said Fred Thompson of the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club, the event’s sponsor.

About 140,000 fans attended the tournament last year.
