Magic’s Elapsed-Time Lead Is Not Expected to Hold Up in Transpac

Magic, skippered by Jim Hoskinson of Marina del Rey, was the elapsed-time leader Wednesday in the Los Angeles-to-Honolulu yacht race.

However, officials of the 2,225-mile Transpac said five other boats were expected to oust Magic, including the projected winner, Sweet Okole, skippered by Dean Treadway of Richmond, Calif.

Magic completed the race Tuesday night, while Sweet Okole was expected to cross the Diamond Head finish line Wednesday night.

Second on elapsed time was Swiftsure out of the St. Francis Yacht Club of San Francisco. Third was Nick Frazee’s Swiftsure III, which covered the course in 10 days 19 hours 21 minutes 47 seconds to win first-to-finish honors Monday.

Thirty-one boats had completed the race by Wednesday morning, with as many as 20 more expected to finish by Wednesday night.
