The field of candidates for San Diego city manager narrowed Friday as the City Council cut the number of hopefuls to the four from Dallas, Oklahoma City, Berkeley and Cincinnati, City Hall sources said.

A final selection is likely by early next week. Still in the running are:

- Camille Cates Barnett, 36, deputy city manager of Dallas. Barnett has worked as an administrator in Sunnyvale, Calif., and Grand Rapids, Mich. She went to Dallas in 1977 and was named deputy city manager in October, 1981. Her salary is $92,064.

- C. Scott Johnson, 40, city manager of Oklahoma City. Johnson has been with the city since 1976, and before that was city manager of Portsmouth, Ohio, and assistant to the city manager in Des Moines. His salary is $75,000.

- Daniel Boggan, 39, city manager of Berkeley. Boggan is from Flint, Mich., and worked for Portland, Ore.; San Diego County, and Essex County, N.J., before becoming Berkeley city manager in January, 1982. His salary is $77,160.

- Sylvester Murray, 43, city manager of Cincinnati. Murray was city administrator of Ann Arbor, Mich., for six years before he took the Cincinnati post in September, 1979. Before that, he was city manager of the Detroit suburb of Inkster for three years. His salary is $80,300.

Murray refused an invitation to stay for a second interview Friday, saying he had to leave for a vacation in Alaska with his family. But after he returned home Friday night, he agreed, at the request of City Council members, to meet his family later and return to San Diego Monday for an interview.

Two candidates interviewed during a marathon session by the council Thursday were eliminated from the running. They were Donald F. McIntyre, 54, city manager of Pasadena since 1973, and Arnold Jesse Wilson, 43, former city manager of Santa Ana and Kansas City, Mo., sources said.

The new city manager will replace Ray Blair, who resigned for health reasons in June.
