Brea : Smoking Restrictions to Take Effect Aug. 15

Share

Beginning Aug. 15, it will be illegal for Brea residents to smoke in indoor public areas.

Local police, however, will not “go look for violations,” Assistant City Manager Denise Ovrom said. Instead, police will enforce the law as residents file complaints, she said.

Following council approval last week of the new law, the Brea Chamber of Commerce has 90 days, beginning Aug. 1, to draw up a proposal that would regulate private businesses, City Clerk Donna Rhine.

Brea’s new ordinance, which restricts smoking in public buildings and calls for smoking sections in restaurants that seat more than 50 people, did not elicit “much public input” during public hearings, Rhine said. “People seem to be accepting it very readily,” she said.

Brea follows the county Board of Supervisors and two other cities--Newport Beach and Laguna Beach--which enacted similar ordinances this year.

Yorba Linda city officials also are scheduled to consider a smoking ordinance similar to Brea’s during their Aug. 19 council meeting.
