A charge of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter was filed Tuesday against a Valencia man involved in an accident that killed a 13-year-old Canyon Country boy, the California Highway Patrol said.

Kenneth White died July 9, several hours after his mother’s auto was hit broadside by a car driven by Terry Whitaker, 21. According to the CHP, Kenneth’s mother, Katsue White, 37, was driving east on Shadow Pine Boulevard in Canyon Country at 6:50 p.m. when Whitaker’s vehicle ran a stop sign and collided with hers.

Whitaker is scheduled to be arraigned in Newhall Municipal Court on Aug. 27, CHP Officer Barry Hogan said.

Hogan said accident investigators found no evidence that Whitaker had been drinking. Whitaker told investigators the sun was shining in his eyes, preventing him from seeing the stop sign.

Katsue White suffered a fractured pelvis and other injuries and has since been released. A second passenger, her 10-year-old daughter, Kimberly, suffered head injuries and remains hospitalized in stable condition.

Whitaker was treated for minor injuries at a Valencia hospital and released the same evening.
