Weaver’s Decision Wasn’t Over Weight : Triplets Go 2 for 3 as Lloyd Backs Out of Match With Lifeguard

Before the main bout between Sean Mannion and Bert Lee at Monday’s boxing card at the Irvine Marriott, boxers Lloyd Weaver and Johnny Armijo were introduced to the crowd, which was told that the two were not fighting each other because of “an unfortunate weight discrepancy.”

Wrong.

The two were not fighting their scheduled four-round bout at 154 pounds simply because Weaver backed out.

A sellout crowd of 1,621 was on hand at the hotel to witness the pairing of the Weaver triplets of Pomona all on a fight card the same night, but of the 21-year-old brothers of former heavyweight champion Mike Weaver, only Troy and Floyd actually fought.

“Oh well,” one of the Weaver trainers said before the fight, “two out of three of them isn’t bad.”

Ordinarily, no, but Lloyd Weaver’s cancellation came as a disappointment to Armijo, a Huntington Beach lifeguard who had a small contingent of family and friends buy tickets just to see him in action.

For Armijo, 23, and a 1980 graduate of Edison High School, the scheduled fight against Lloyd Weaver would have been his first at the hotel and only his third as a pro. Instead, there was just disappointment.

“I don’t really know what happened,” Armijo said. “At the weigh-in, his trainer told my trainer that the fight was off and that was it. Up until this (Monday) morning, I thought it was on.”

“My friends and father came to the fight, but now we’ll all have to wait until next time.”

Armijo will fight on the Aug. 26 card at the hotel against an as-yet-to-be-determined opponent, but that doesn’t take all of the sting out of missing out on Monday’s show.

Lloyd Weaver expressed disappointment Monday at not being able to fight on the same card with his brothers, but deferred all specifics to his management team, part of which includes Paul Fucaloro, brother of the triplets’ manager Tony Fucaloro.

Paul Fucaloro then explained that Lloyd had been scheduled to fight Jesse Ruiz of Westminster before last weekend, when Ruiz withdrew and the promoter (Don Fraser) came up with Armijo as a replacement.

“Lloyd thought about it and then told me that he hadn’t had an amateur fight in 14 months and he didn’t feel comfortable in facing a southpaw,” Fucaloro said, adding that he is discussing the possibility of pairing the triplets on a card at the Forum for sometime in August.

Armijo will continue training for an August fight at the Marriott under Jackie McCoy, who also trains Evelio Perez of Santa Ana and Gilbert Davila of Pomona, brother of former WBC bantamweight champion Albert Davila.
