With the speedy St. Louis Cardinal team in San Diego this weekend, it’s ironic that the Padres are the ones hosting a race Sunday.

The sixth annual Lions/Padres 10-kilometer race, set to begin at 7 a.m., has been designated as the 10-kilometer road race championship for San Diego and Imperial Counties by The Athletic Congress. TAC championship categories include: Women’s Open (18-39), Youth (12-and-under and 13-16) and Masters (40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70-and-over).

The race will begin in the parking lot at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium and finish inside the stadium. Runners will go west on Friars Road.

Sam Snead, Gene Littler, Scott Simpson and Phil Rodgers are among the past winners of the San Diego County Open golf tournament, which will be played this weekend at Cottonwood Country Club in El Cajon.

In keeping with the tournament’s traditional format, the golfers will play 18 holes today and Saturday and 36 holes on Sunday.

Golfers with a valid handicap are eligible to participate in the San Diego Match Play championship, beginning today and running through Aug. 4 at courses throughout the county. The championship round will be held at Singing Hills Country Club in El Cajon on Aug. 15.

The one-day, match-play, computerized scoring system will be used throughout the championship. Golfers will be awarded one match point for each golfer they defeat on a particular hole.

Golfers may compete at their local course as many times as they wish between now and Aug. 4. Course winners will be those players with the highest number of match points.
