Woman, 65, Fatally Injured in Struggle

A wounded 65-year-old woman who, with her sister, struggled to push an intruder out of their Santa Ana house late Saturday, collapsed and died before help could arrive, police said Sunday.

Ofelia Guzman Godinez died about 10 p.m. of a single stab wound in the chest, Police Lt. Jack Nelson said. A neighbor, Elio Castro, 28, was arrested on suspicion of murder.

Police were called to the South Cedar Street home by Maria Luisa Godinez, 50, sister and housemate of the victim.

Maria Godinez was awakened by the sound of a struggle in her sister’s bedroom, Nelson said. The two sisters then forced the intruder out the kitchen door and locked it, and the victim collapsed, Nelson said. Ofelia Godinez was dead when paramedics arrived. No weapon was found.

Castro was being held without bail at the Orange County Jail, Nelson said.
