Michael Walker, 15, of Long Beach has been awarded the U.S. Department of Justice Young American Medal for Bravery for helping a man who had been stabbed during a robbery.

Walker, then 14, was riding his bicycle on Anaheim Street in August, 1984, when he saw Bill Fish, 64, being assaulted. Walked rushed to Fish’s aid, disarmed the assailant by kicking a knife from his hand and treated Fish’s stab wounds using first-aid skills he had learned as a member of Boy Scout Troop 49 of Long Beach. Walker applied a tourniquet made from a belt, treated Fish for shock and called the Long Beach Fire Department.

A representative of Gov. George Deukmejian’s office said the teen-ager was cited for “uncommon heroism” and “resourcefulness in the saving of a human life while at great risk to his own.” Each year, only two persons from each state receive the award, which was presented by Deukmejian.
