The Cincinnati Reds announced a five-player deal that will bring them veteran catcher Bo Diaz from the Philadelphia Phillies and minor league pitcher Greg Simpson.

General Manager Bill Bergesch said the Reds were giving up infielder Tom Foley and two players to be named later. One of those players could be catcher Alan Knicely, who was sent to the Phillies’ Portland farm club but remained the property of the Reds.

The trade is the second deal completed by the Reds in the last few weeks. The Reds got third baseman Buddy Bell from the Texas Rangers last month.

“This is one of the players that we felt if we needed a little help with one position, this is the one position we were interested in improving a little bit,” Bergesch said.

Diaz is in his eighth major league season, having divided his career between the Cleveland Indians and the Phillies. Diaz batted .288 with 18 homers and 85 RBIs in 1982 with the Phillies and followed with a .236 average, 15 homers and 64 RBIs in 1983. He missed most of last season because of a knee operation.
