San Diego St. Fires Mary Alice Hill

Mary Alice Hill, the only woman athletic director in a Division I-A school, was fired Thursday by San Diego State.
Hill’s future at the school had been shaky since university president Thomas Day ordered her to take a two-week vacation July 26, two days after Hill had fired three members of the athletic department and a private contractor in charge of promotions. Day reinstated all four 3 1/2 hours later.
“My only comment is that I’m disappointed,” Hill said. “I really love this institution, and it’s tough.”
She was reassigned as an assistant to Day, a position that will end Nov. 8.
Hill’s attorney said he would follow a university procedure in which he can ask Day to reconsider the change.
