John Tudor pitched a one-hitter, and Andy Van Slyke and Terry Pendleton hit consecutive home runs to cap a five-run first inning as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Chicago Cubs, 8-0, Thursday night at St. Louis.

An enthusiastic post-strike turnout of 39,203 watched St. Louis make the most of eight hits in four-plus innings off Chicago starter Scott Sanderson (5-5).

Tudor (14-8) won for the 13th time in his last 14 starts with a six-strikeout, one-walk performance that helped St. Louis snap a three-game losing streak.

Vince Coleman, Willie McGee and Tommy Herr had two hits each for St. Louis, with Coleman and McGee scoring two runs apiece and major league leader Coleman stealing his 75th base.

Leon Durham’s ground single just beyond the reach of Cardinal first baseman Clark in the fifth represented the Cubs’ only hit off Tudor, who faced only 29 batters.

The St. Louis left-hander set down 14 straight before issuing a two-out walk to Gary Matthews in the Chicago fourth. It was the sixth shutout of the year and ninth complete game for Tudor, whose only other career one-hitter was May 27, 1983 for the Boston Red Sox.

San Diego 6, Houston 5--Carmelo Martinez delivered a two-run, game-tying single, and Jerry Royster added a game-winning single in a four-run ninth inning at San Diego that helped the Padres snap a four-game losing streak.

The victory snapped Houston’s four-game winning streak.

Tony Gwynn and Steve Garvey opened the ninth with singles. One out later, Terry Kennedy hit a ground ball to first baseman Glenn Davis, whose throw to second hit Garvey in the back, allowing a run to score. Davis was charged with a second error for obstructing Kennedy as he rounded first.

Jerry Davis went in to run for Kennedy. Martinez singled home Garvey and Davis to make the score 5-5. Bobby Brown ran for Martinez, stole second and went to third on a throwing error by Mark Bailey. Tim Flannery walked and Jerry Royster, batting for winning pitcher Craig Lefferts (7-5), drove a single against the wall in left, allowing Brown to score the winning run.

Garvey hit his 14th homer of the season in the first inning. Martinez hit his 14th homer leading off the eighth.

New York 14, Montreal 7--Keith Hernandez went 5 for 6 and drove in three runs, and Gary Carter, George Foster and Darryl Strawberry each homered to pace a 20-hit attack that sparked the Mets’ victory at Montreal.

Carter and Foster each hit two-run homers. Strawberry’s solo shot in the eighth inning was his 16th homer of the season.

It was the second five-hit game of Hernandez’s career and it was the most runs and hits off the Expos this season.

Atlanta 2, San Francisco 0--Rick Mahler pitched a four-hitter and drove in a run with an infield hit, and Terry Harper had an RBI single and scored once as the Braves won before only 3,557 at San Francisco.
