Producer-director Frank Capra, 88, winner of four Academy Awards, was reported in fair condition at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage today after suffering a possible stroke.

Nursing supervisor Gerri Chaney said Capra, who was admitted to the hospital in a mild coma Sunday night, was alert and comfortable this morning and was undergoing neurological tests.

Capra, who lives in nearby La Quinta, won Oscars as a director for “It Happened One Night” in 1934, “Mr. Deeds Goes to Town” in 1936 and “You Can’t Take It With You” in 1938. He won his fourth Oscar as producer of “You Can’t Take It With You,” and the picture won the award for best film.
