A Pacific Beach woman who was severely beaten in her apartment early Sunday morning remained in critical condition at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla Monday.
Police responding to a report of a prowler found Patricia Joanne Pekny, 28, with severe head wounds, a police spokesman said. John James Campbell, 35, the woman’s former boyfriend, was booked into County Jail Sunday on suspicion of attempted murder and burglary.
Police apprehended Campbell in the alley at the rear of Pekny’s apartment. Campbell was carrying a screwdriver and a blood-soaked concrete block and wearing bloody clothes, the spokesman said.
Neighbors told police that Campbell and Pekny had been living together until recently.
