City Clerk Charles Davis has sent a letter to the district attorney’s office, reporting that seven candidates in Compton’s recent election have not filed final campaign finance reports required by state law.
Deputy Dist. Atty. Candace Beason said this week that she is reviewing the matter and will probably send letters to the candidates urging them to comply. If they fail, however, her office has the power to bring civil or criminal charges against them.
The seven tardy candidates, who were supposed to disclose their contributions and expenses by June 20, include Mayor Walter Tucker and City Atty. Wesley Fenderson Jr. Both won reelection.
Under state law, the city attorney is initially responsible for enforcing campaign finance violations. Davis had sent a similar letter to Fenderson’s office in July, suggesting that each alleged violator be fined up to $100.
When no action resulted, Davis said he decided Aug. 1 to refer the matter to the district attorney.
