Arizona State University has initiated mandatory drug testing for all its athletes, Athletic Director Charles Harris said. Volleyball players and cheerleaders were checked Monday, and freshmen football players were checked Tuesday. Other tests will be done on a sport-by-sport basis in conjunction with physical examinations.
Random testing of athletes is also planned during the school year as a follow-up to the mandatory tests, said Harris, who took over as Arizona State’s athletic director on July 8.
Arizona State joined USC as the only Pacific 10 Conference schools planning mandatory drug testing of athletes.
For the past three years, random testing of Sun Devil athletes has been done primarily for football, baseball and basketball players.
