A man in his early 20s apparently hanged himself in a holding cell at the La Mesa police station Monday, a police spokeswoman said. He was taken to Grossmont Hospital in critical condition.
The man, whose name was not released, was taken into custody for a vehicle code violation at 10:15 a.m., and officials found him at 10:55. The spokeswoman said he had fashioned a noose from his shirt and was hanging from an air vent.
Police said they were withholding identification of the man until his relatives had been notified.
