KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Comets on Tuesday signed free-agent goalkeeper Alan Mayer to a two-year contract, the Major Indoor Soccer League club announced.
Mayer, 33, played for the Las Vegas Americans last season and became a free agent after the franchise folded.
Mayer was the MISL’s most valuable player in the 1982-83 season while with the Sockers and is the only goalkeeper ever to win the award.
The Americans had a 17-12 record last season when Mayer was defending the goal, and he was the league’s fifth-ranked goalie, allowing an average of 4.23 goals per game.
Mayer will join veterans Manny Schwartz and Enzo DiPede, currently a free agent but expected to sign a contract with the club later this week, in the battle for starting goalkeeper.
