A Signal Hill man was arrested Thursday after gunpowder he was mixing in the living room of his apartment exploded, burning him and injuring a man and a 1-year-old boy, police said.

Officers discovered 40 rifles and handguns and a library of old war movies when they searched the wreckage of the apartment at 2730 Wall St., where the explosion occurred a few minutes before 6 p.m., police reported.

Harold Martin, 20, who lives on the second floor, was arrested on suspicion of setting off an explosion and illegal possession of explosives. He was treated for superficial burns at Memorial Medical Center of Long Beach.
