A fire probably started by transients damaged a Newhall business and a railroad tank car parked behind it Friday, causing an estimated $305,000 in damage, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

One fireman was injured slightly when he fell from the building’s loading dock. Arson investigators for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will interview transients today in an effort to determine the cause of the blaze, said fire Capt. Robert Sheets.

The fire broke out shortly before 4 p.m. at King Video Cable Co., 24838 Railroad Ave., and was contained at about 4:25 p.m., although firefighters worked through Friday evening extinguishing stubborn pockets of flame, said county fire spokesman Steve Bentley.

The tank car, which buckled under the fire’s heat, had contained fuel oil but was empty when the blaze broke out, Sheets said. In all, 13 firefighting units, including one hazardous-materials team, responded to the blaze.
