A16-year-old Agoura Hills resident who allegedly slashed the tires of a man who tried to collect money from him and then shot the man in the face has surrendered to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies.

Deputy Rick Adams said the suspected gunman was arrested Thursday night on suspicion of attempted murder after he walked into the Malibu sheriff’s substation with his parents and a lawyer. Adams said the youth gave deputies a .22-caliber revolver that was believed to have been used in the Tuesday night attack on 19-year-old Todd Frey of Agoura Hills.

Frey was shot in the face in Agoura Hills after he and a friend drove to the home of the 16-year-old to collect a debt, authorities said. During an ensuing argument, Frey’s tires were slashed, Adams said. Frey was shot once in the left cheek by someone who had apparently trailed the car until it broke down a short distance from the home.

The youth, whose name was not released because of his age, was being held at Sylmar Juvenile Hall, Adams said. Deputies at the Malibu substation refused to discuss details of the case.

Frey, who suffered only minor injuries, was released Thursday from Westlake Hospital.
