Holmes, Spinks Arrive for Fight
Undefeated heavyweight champion Larry Holmes and undisputed world light-heavyweight champ Michael Spinks both arrived within minutes of each other Sunday to begin preparing for their heavyweight title fight next month.
Holmes confidently predicted victory by knockout in their 15-round fight Sept. 21, while Spinks declined to make any predictions and said he wasn’t even sure how much he’d weigh for the bout.
“I’m going to knock him out,” said Holmes, 35, whose record is 48-0, with 34 knockouts. “A light heavyweight has never beaten a big man like me. People think I am too old and washed up, but just wait and see what happens.”
Spinks, who has been fighting at the 175-pound limit for light heavyweights, said:”I’m going to come in at a comfortable weight. I really don’t know what that will be because I’ve never fought as a heavyweight before. I’m not looking at the scale.”
Holmes, will try to win his 49th bout and tie Rocky Marciano’s record for most victories by an unbeaten heavyweight champion.
Spinks, with a record of 27-0 with 19 knockouts, will attempt to become the first light heavyweight to win a heavyweight championship bout.
