A tearful M.L. Carr, the Boston Celtics’ towel-waving cheerleader, announced his retirement after nine years in the NBA.
“This team has a lot of talent, and I said I’d do whatever it took for the team to win, and so now it’s time for me to move along,” Carr, 34, said at a news conference at the team’s rookie camp in Marshfield, Mass. “This time the towel’s not to get the fans cheering but for wiping my eyes.”
Carr will remain with the Celtics as a scout.
He finished with a career average of 9.7 points a game and averaged 18.7 during the 1978-79 season with the Detroit Pistons.
