Nuclear-freeze advocates have gathered 5,000 signatures locally on a petition they want to present to President Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev as part of a nationwide campaign to end the arms race, organizers said.

The nationwide petition, which has a million signatures, states: “Don’t Just Talk--Freeze Now!” It is to be submitted at the summit meeting planned for this fall in Geneva, according to Kelly Hayes-Raitt, a volunteer with the group that organized the campaign.

She said the local effort was centered in Santa Monica, West Los Angeles, Malibu, Venice and Marina del Rey.

“The fact that the group was able to gather these signatures in just six weeks shows the intensive desire of the people in this district to see that there’s a freeze immediately,” Hayes-Raitt said.
