A man who fired a shotgun into a crowded downtown park last May, inflicting minor wounds on nine people, has been found not guilty by reason of insanity.

Sacramento County Superior Court Judge Benjamin Diaz referred Eric Paul Bright, 33, Thursday to the county Mental Health Division for evaluation.

He could be committed to a state mental hospital for as long as 12 years.

Bright had withdrawn his not-guilty plea and waived his right to a jury trial, agreeing to let the judge decide the case on the basis of psychiatric reports.

Bright, who lived across the street from John C. Fremont Park, confessed he fired two rounds of birdshot into the park.
