Movie Theater Proposal to Be Reviewed
The City Council last week asked for a staff review of a developer’s proposal to build a movie theater on the west side of the Hermosa Beach Community Center.
The unanimous action came in response to a request by the Alexander Haagen Development Co., which constructed the recently opened Hermosa Plaza Shopping Center across from the community center on Pacific Coast Highway and Pier Avenue.
The proposal, which will be reviewed by the city Planning Commission and two other advisory panels, would require the demolition of tennis courts and a parking lot owned by the city. A 500-space parking structure with six tennis courts on the roof would be built in their place. No community center buildings would be disrupted.
The land, however, carries a deed restriction from when it was sold to the city by the Hermosa Beach School District that permits only public uses of the property.
The deed restriction would have to be lifted before approval could be granted. A development agreement between the city and the Haagen company would also be required.
Recommendations and reports on the feasibility of the project will be reviewed at the council meeting on Sept. 10.
