Sport salmon anglers have been banned from fishing the lower Klamath River for the rest of this year. The California Fish and Game Commission voted to close the Klamath for 1 1/2 miles--from the mouth of the river to the U.S. 101 bridge near the town of Klamath. The commission put the regulations into effect to increase the fall spawning run of Klamath River chinook and to reduce conflicts between sport anglers and Indian gill net fishermen. Some businessmen said closure of the lower Klamath River will cost millions in tourist dollars.
