A 26-year-old San Diego man died of burns he suffered when his car collided with a truck Wednesday morning on rain-slicked Palomar Airport Road. The driver of the truck remained in critical condition, authorities said.
Larry Scott Stephens was traveling east on Palomar Airport Road when an on-coming truck apparently lost control on the wet road and spun into the path of Stephens’ car. Both vehicles burst into flames, a spokesman for the San Diego County coroner’s office said.
Both Stephens and the driver of the truck, Richard Johnston, 26, were taken by Life Flight helicopter to UC San Diego Medical Center burn center, where Stephens was pronounced dead at 10 a.m. Johnston suffered second- and third-degree burns over 50% of his body, a hospital spokeswoman said.
