Agricultural Commissioner Paul Engler declared an end to Los Angeles County’s battle against the melon fly. Engler said no additional melon flies have been found since the June 21 discovery of one of the crop-destroying pests in Pasadena. Fearful of possible infestation, county workers set an extra 1,200 traps at a cost of $48,000, Engler said. The melon fly is one of several pests that have infested California in recent years, prompting costly eradication battles to protect the state’s multimillion-dollar agriculture industry.
