Robinson Says Dickerson Is Coming West for Meeting With Ram Owner

Eric Dickerson, who has been sitting out his holdout in his hometown of Sealy, Tex., will return to California this weekend to meet with Coach John Robinson and owner Georgia Frontiere.

“There’s a hope that a meeting can be arranged between Eric and myself and probably Georgia and somebody else, probably sometime next week,” Robinson said Thursday.

According to an Associated Press report, the “somebody else” could be State Assembly Speaker Willie Brown, who has helped mediate several sports contract disputes in the past.

The meeting was proposed by Dickerson’s adviser, Jack Rodri, who called Robinson Thursday morning. Charles Chin, Rodri’s aide, later phoned reporters to say Dickerson was heading west, and Robinson confirmed it.

Asked if he readily agreed, Robinson said: “I think anything would be a good idea. It’s moving. There’s a growing concern by all parties that the right thing would be to have Eric in here playing.”

Dickerson’s backup, Barry Redden, missed both days of heavy work this week because of a sprained right ankle, which a spokesman said was “about 85%” Thursday.

“I saw him jogging today,” Robinson said. “I’ve got to see him run.” A decision will be made today on whether Redden will start against Denver Sunday at Anaheim Stadium.

“If Barry doesn’t play, Charlie White would start,” Robinson said. Also available are Lynn Cain and A.J. Jones. Cain, a former USC player released by Atlanta last week, signed with the Rams Thursday. Defensive back David Croudip was waived.
