A Van Nuys man who was gardening in his yard Wednesday evening found a World War I artillery shell, Los Angeles police said.

The shell, a circa-1916, 90-millimeter projectile, was found in the 13500 block of Hart Street by a resident who was trimming ivy, Sgt. Craig Rungaitis said.

“Sort of a strange thing to find in your yard, but that’s what happened,” Rungaitis said, adding that it is not known how long the shell was there. “Who knows, the thing might have been somebody’s personal war memorial.”

The Police Department’s bomb squad took the shell to Woodley Avenue Park in Van Nuys, where it was to be either dismantled or detonated, Rungaitis said.
