Tom Seaver was in limbo for 48 hours, but the Chicago White Sox took him back Wednesday after failing to work out a deal with the New York Yankees for the three-time Cy Young Award winner.

White Sox spokesman Paul Jensen said that Seaver was put on the waiver list Sept. 3, and the Yankees claimed the 40-year-old veteran at noon Monday.

The Yankees were the only club to do so, and their move set off a 48-hour period during which the White Sox had to trade Seaver to New York or remove him from the waiver list.

Chicago pulled Seaver back at noon Wednesday.

“Asking waivers is very routine in baseball,” White Sox General Manager Roland Hemond said. “The fact the Yankees filed a claim placed us in a position to open talks only with the Yankees. We obviously could not reach a mutual agreement.”

Seaver, whose contract requires his approval of any trade, told the New York Daily News “that the thought of coming back to New York is certainly attractive from a personal standpoint.”

Seaver, who won his 300th game Aug. 4 at Yankee Stadium, is 13-10 this season with a 3.25 earned-run average, eighth best in the American League.
