The Southeast : Bo Jackson Gains 205 as No. 1 Auburn Beats Southern Mississippi

Bo Jackson scored twice and rushed for 205 yards Saturday to lead No. 1-ranked Auburn to a 29-18 victory over Southern Mississippi at Auburn, Ala.

Tommie Agee also scored two touchdowns to help Auburn improve to 2-0. The Golden Eagles are 1-1.

Both of Jackson’s touchdowns came on two-yard runs. Agee scored on a 15-yard run and an 18-yard pass reception. Jackson’s two-game totals are 495 rushing yards and six touchdowns.

Southern Mississippi suffered a heavy blow when starting quarterback Robert Ducksworth was sidelined with a leg injury after racking up 101 yards in total offense in the first quarter.

His replacement, Andrew Anderson, gave Southern Mississippi its final score, diving into the end zone from four yards out with 52 seconds left in the game. He was sacked trying for the two-point conversion.

Anderson, who threw three interceptions, shocked the crowd of 60,000 on the second play of the second half. He dodged a heavy rush and threw a 78-yard touchdown to Lyneal Auston to bring Southern Mississippi within 19-9.

Rex Banks missed the extra point, but his 38-yard field goal after an interception two minutes later closed the gap to 19-12.

Auburn went ahead, 26-12, after a 42-yard pass from Jeff Burger to Freddie Weygand set up Jackson’s second touchdown with 10:02 left in the third quarter. Chris Johnson kicked a 27-yard field goal with 8:41 left in the fourth quarter to make it 29-12.

“We were a very ordinary team today,” Auburn Coach Pat Dye said. “We didn’t look like what a No. 1 team is supposed to look like.”

Alabama 23, Texas A&M; 10--Junior placekicker Van Tiffin kicked fourth-quarter field goals of 40 and 51 yards to break a 10-10 tie with the Aggies as the Crimson Tide won at Birmingham, Ala.

In the first quarter, Tiffin kicked a 57-yard field goal, breaking the Alabama record of 53 yards, which he set last year against Penn State.

“I felt that on that first field goal, that anyone could have kicked it,” Tiffin said. “It wasn’t that hard. The only thing is to kick it straight . . . the wind just picked it up and took it.”

Alabama Coach Ray Perkins said: “I wouldn’t take another kicker in America for Van Tiffin.”

With just over a minute left in the game, Alabama (2-0) scored on a 32-yard touchdown run by Craig Turner to account for the final margin.

Alabama opened the scoring with a 64-yard drive in the first quarter, capped by a two-yard run by Chester Braggs.

Arkansas 24, Mississippi 19--Carl Miller ran five yards for the go-ahead touchdown with 8:47 to play at Jacksonville, Miss., as 14th-ranked Arkansas held off stubborn Mississippi.

Arkansas (1-0), its flexbone offense sputtering at times, came from behind twice and capitalized on two late turnovers before stopping Mississippi (0-1-1).

Cornerback Kevin Wyatt’s recovery of a fumble at the Mississippi 30-yard line with 11:04 remaining set up the decisive Arkansas touchdown. The Razorbacks then scored on six plays--all on the ground. Sophomore quarterback Greg Thomas’ 10-yard run was the big gain, and Miller’s score gave Arkansas a 17-12 lead.

Arkansas linebacker David Dudley scored a touchdown with 46 seconds to play when he took a tipped pass back 30 yards for an insurance touchdown.

Ole Miss scored with four seconds left when Jamie Holder grabbed a batted pass to complete a 39-yard play. The Rebels tried an onside kick after the touchdown, but Arkansas recovered and ran out the clock.

Mississippi State 30, Syracuse 3--Rodney Peters ran for two touchdowns to lead Mississippi State to a victory at Starkville, Miss.

The Bulldogs (2-0) scored 17 points in the final quarter.

Mississippi State piled up 439 yards to Syracuse’s 200.

Mississippi State quarterback Don Smith led the Bulldogs inrushing with 104 yards in 17 carries and completed 15 of 21 passes for 195 yards and a touchdown.

Tim Green, a Syracuse defensive tackle, suffered a concussion in the second quarter.

Georgia 17, Baylor 14--Fred Lane scored on a 33-yard reverse, and freshman Tim Worley scored on a one-yard plunge after a turnover as Georgia snapped a five-game winless streak with a victory at Athens, Ga.

Lane’s run broke a scoreless game in the first quarter, and Worley put Georgia ahead to stay at 14-7 early in the third quarter after Kenny Sims had pounced on a Baylor fumble at the Bear 24.

Both teams are 1-1. Baylor plays USC next Saturday night at the Coliseum.

Georgia, which lost to Alabama, 20-16, last week, had lost its last three regular-season games last year and was tied, 17-17, by Florida State in the Florida Citrus Bowl.

The outcome left both teams with 1-1 records.

LSU 23, North Carolina 13--Running back Dalton Hilliard rushed for 142 yards and two touchdowns, and Ron Lewis kicked a school-record 54-yard field goal as 12th-ranked Louisiana State rallied to win at Chapel Hill, N.C.

Lewis’ kick, which surpassed by one yard the school record set by Juan Roca in 1972 against Rice, broke a 13-13 halftime tie and gave the Tigers their first lead with 5:24 left in the third period.

Hilliard, who carried 31 times, scored from three yards out with 12:20 left in the game as LSU won its season opener. North Carolina is 1-1.

LSU quarterback Jeff Wickersham passed for 206 yards and one touchdown on a 23-of-34 performance. Tiger running back Gary James was responsible for 169 yards of total offense by rushing for 72 yards in eight carries and catching 11 passes for 97 yards.
