San Ysidro
A 30-year-old Border Patrol agent is “happy to be alive” after a bulletproof vest stopped a bullet aimed at his chest Tuesday morning, a Border Patrol spokesman said.
Agent Dana L. Cunningham was patrolling on foot in an area near San Ysidro called Moody’s Canyon when he saw a man running toward him. Cunningham pointed his flashlight at the man, and another man crouching behind some brush shot him, spokesman Ed Pyeatt said.
The bullet lodged in the middle of the vest. Cunningham was treated at Mercy Hospital for a bruise where the bullet hit.
Cunningham fired four shots at the two men but they escaped, Pyeatt said. Border agents are not required to wear vests, Pyeatt said.
