An English professor at California State University, Fullerton, was killed late Tuesday night on a canyon road in Laguna Beach when she swerved to avoid a pickup truck driven by a man later arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and felony manslaughter, police said today.

Police, called by several people from roadside phones, found the body of Priscilla Oaks, 61, of Laguna Beach in her overturned car at the bottom of a ravine along Laguna Canyon Road at about 10:30 p.m. The truck driver, Leonard Eisler, 31, of Anaheim, was injured when his vehicle rolled over as both drivers swerved to avoid a collision. He was taken to Mission Community Hospital in Mission Viejo, where he was in serious condition this morning. Oaks also had taught at UCLA.
