Two Local Surfers Win First-Round Tournament Heats
Two local men won their heats Thursday in the opening round of the second annual Stubbies Pro International Surfing Tournament at Oceanside Harbor.
With their victories, Mike Lambresi of Oceanside and Todd Martin of Encinitas advanced to the second round, which takes place today. Thirty-two competitors--16 winners from Thursday and the 16 top seeds--will face off starting at 7 this morning.
The first round of the Michelob Cup, a professional surfing event for women, will take place today, also at Oceanside Harbor. Semifinals and finals for both men and women will be Sunday.
In head-to-head competition yesterday, Lambresi defeated fellow Oceanside resident Dan Smith, and Martin beat 11th-seeded Dave Parmenter of Cambria.
