Lambresi Reaches Surfing Semifinals
Mike Lambresi of Oceanside, the No. 18 seed, defeated Wayne Bartholomew of Australia Friday to advance to today’s quarterfinal round of the second annual Stubbies Pro International Surfing Tournament at Oceanside Harbor.
On Saturday, Lambresi will face unseeded Brad Gerlach of Newport Beach, who pulled off the major upset of Friday’s competition when he beat defending tournament champion and third-seeded Shaun Tomson of Los Angeles.
Todd Martin of Encinitas lost a close decision Friday to top-seeded Tom Carroll of Australia. Carroll was picked over Martin by three of five judges.
Also advancing to the quarterfinals was the second seed, Mark Occhilupo of Australia, who beat a fellow Australian, Robbie Bains.
In the women’s competition, Debbie Beacham of La Jolla lost Friday to Tricia Gill of Huntington Beach. Both men and women resume surfing at 7 this morning.
