Michigan Shuts Out Maryland, 20-0, for Third Straight Win

Michigan seemed to get all the breaks Saturday--but a couple of them are expected to sideline two of its offensive linemen.

“Maryland moved the ball on us,” Michigan Coach Bo Schembechler said after his No. 12-ranked Wolverines shut out No. 17 Maryland, 20-0, for their third straight win. “But we got some breaks.

“We blew a touchdown, but they fumbled the ball right back to us. That was kind of them.

“But I may have lost my guards for the season. (Sophomore Mike) Husar has a knee (injury) and (senior Mark) Hammerstein has a broken (left) arm.”

It was injuries last season, starting with Jim Harbaugh’s broken left arm, that cut down Michigan after a 3-1 start. Harbaugh sat out the rest of the 6-6 season.

But Saturday, Harbaugh put on a sensational passing display against the 2-2 Terrapins that included touchdown passes of 10 and 3 yards to tight end Eric Kattus, who had 6 catches for 81 yards.

Harbaugh completed 16 of 20 attempts for 196 yards and ran another 32 yards on option plays.

Freshman placekicker Mike Gillette added field goals of 34 and 25 yards for Michigan.

“Michigan did a good job. I’ve got no excuses,” Maryland Coach Bobby Ross said. “We got beat by a very good football team.”

Maryland threatened at the end of the third quarter, driving to the Michigan six, but quarterback Stan Gelbaugh tried to force a pass into the end zone and Doug Mallory intercepted.

Maryland also had a chance to score in the waning seconds of the game but time ran out before Gelbaugh could complete another pass.

Gelbaugh finished 16 of 29 for 210 yards along with 4 interceptions.

Michigan has yet to give up a touchdown in defeating Notre Dame, South Carolina and Maryland.
